Madison Gas and Electric Granted 2008 Be Safe Award for Leadership
In addition to providing generous financial and in-kind support for community collaboration in the area of safety, MGE staff provide safety education to area teachers and school children, and at so many events organized by Safe Communities and its partners. MGE was a founding member of Safe Communities, and participated in Madison’s first Injury Prevention Conference.
HOPES, McFarland Awarded 2008 Be Safe Award for Advocacy
HOPES and its many dedicated members – most of whom have lost loved ones to suicide – are stalwarts in efforts to educate people in Dane County about how each of us can take action to prevent suicide. The community of McFarland has been a committed and enthusiastic partner and is an example of how schools, churches and individuals can respond proactively to the tragedy of suicide.
Be Safe Award Winner for Innovation in Traffic Safety: Amigos en Azul
Amigos en Azul (Friends in Blue) of Madison Police Department coordinate car clinics – events where Spanish speaking drivers have children fitted for car seats and cars checked for equipment violations. This work is so important as traffic crashes are the number one cause of death for Latinos in the US, surpassing all other causes. Congratulations, Amigos en Azul!
Be Safe Award Winner for Collaboration: United Way 2-1-1 Falls Prevention Efforts
In spite of tight resources and overextended staff, United Way 2-1-1 worked with health care systems and older adult service providers to build a comprehensive database and craft a model falls prevention referral system for older adults and their families.
