This daylong workshop is designed for people who may have contact with and need to intervene with people who are suicidal – mental health professionals, school personnel, emergency room staff, primary care providers, employee assistance counselors, among others. The fundamentals of suicide risk assessment will be presented based on our most recent available data. Suicide risk will be discussed in various at-risk populations – older adults, children and adolescents, substance abusers and people with mental illness. Legal issues regarding documentation and intervention will be discussed, as well as interview techniques.
At the end of this workshop, participants will:
- be familiar with our latest understanding of risk factors for suicide
- know how to interview for suicide risk
- know the different risks in different populations
- understand legal issues involved in suicide risk management.
